Keynote: When Women Fight Back

Gala Ballroom

More than 60% of victims of romance scams are women, according to the British police reporting center Action Fraud. In March 2022, an American woman lost more than one million UAE dirhams (US$390,000) in an online dating scam.
The recent Netflix docu-drama 'Tinder Swindler' highlights the plight of a number of women who were duped by a conman posing as a billionaire. Unsuspecting women fell for the charms of a young billionaire not realizing that the man was taking money from one woman and spending it on the other - a combination of an emotional and financial fraud delivered through a Ponzi scheme.
Instead of hiding in oblivion, the women have gained a status of global inspiration against emotional fraud. The Netflix stars will share their journeys - from being a victim to an inspiration - at the Arab Women Forum on May 17, 2022.

Arab women’s image abroad has improved. However, it still doesn’t reflect the reality on the ground. With stereotypes and shortcomings, Western and Asian media seldom report about women ministers or women heading financial institutions in the region. The presence of women ambassadors in the capital of major countries is helping in transforming the image. What are the stereotypes that still need to be highlighted? How to change minds and help project a woman’s image closer to reality? With Arab women entrepreneurs becoming more prominent, what issues are they facing and how is this changing the perception? There is a need for an open discussion on the stereotypes and how to fix them.
